Visit of the petroglyph area in Tanum

Hällristning

Despite many years of traveling along the North Bohu coast, both by boat and car, we had not visited the petroglyph area in Tanum. Where people from the Bronze Age carved figures that create stories. But, when we had a visit from my father-in-law and wife now in the fall of 2021, we decided to make a trip and visit these fantastic areas and become a little more historically knowledgeable.

Viewing petroglyphs Tanum

We read the map, packed up in the car and set off, north, towards Tanum Municipality. Once in the area, we realize that these carvings are scattered in several places. More specifically, in around 600 locations. However, each site we visited was well laid out so that it would be easy to absorb the information and view the petroglyphs. It is very fascinating to imagine that the people carved this around 1800-500 BC. and that then the petroglyphs were at sea level. But, today they are located about 25 meters above sea level.

Vitlycke museum

A knowledge and experience center, the Vitlycke Museum, has also been built. We didn't choose to go in there, but it would surely have given us even more knowledge about petroglyphs and the history surrounding them. To read more, it is recommended to read information from Vitlycke Museum and The National Antiquities Office.

Visit to Grebbestad

After our visit to the petroglyphs, we chose to round off our trip by traveling via Grebbestad, to buy coffee there to take home. Back home, we could then talk more about what we had seen and my father-in-law was very impressed by the visit.

Had we been with our friends of the same age on this excursion, we would certainly have also stopped at the Sportsshoppen in Grebbestad, which is a store of 8,000 square meters. But, it had to be another time this day.
