Hiking in rocks & forest
Bohuslän has many hiking trails along the coast and in nearby forests. There are some main trails that you can visit, but also smaller local trails in the different areas. Below we have put together lists that will help you find a hiking trail that suits you.
Shorter hiking trails with local routes
If you only have a few hours at your disposal, 1-3 hours, or want to combine hiking with other activities during one of your visits to Bohuslän, you can try one of these shorter tours:
Southern Bohuslän

You can also walk in the center of Gothenburg. There are several nice tours that work for most people. Read our own article about this here: Tours in central Gothenburg.
Änggårdsbergen in Gothenburg.
Änggårdsbergen is opposite the Castle Forest in Gothenburg. It is easy to get there and most of the leaders are suitable for everyone. Adjacent to Ängårdsbergen is also located Botanical Gardenn, if is fantastic no matter what season it is. Really recommended.
The Delsjö area in Gothenburg
This area has many nice trails to choose from. i. Here in Delsjön there are lots of trails to choose from. You can walk, ride, cycle or roller ski. But, keep in mind that there are certain routes that are not allowed for all means of transport. It is no lower than a brisk walk from Liseberg or the three tones with the hotel Gothia Towers.
Sandsjöbacka / Lake Sisjön.
A large area that has many joints. In the area there is also the lake Sisjön. which is popular as a swimming spot in the summer. It is located in southern Gothenburg. If you go further south, you will come to Askim, Hovås and finally Kungsbacka.
Hisingsparken in Gothenburg.
Has different joints to choose from. The area is around Lillhagsparken. The hotel Sankt Jörgen Park is located nearby.
Lärjeån valley.
Stretches between Hjällbo and Angered. about 7.5 km.
Vättjefjäll.
There are routes between 3 and 25 km long.

Tofta Manor
Hike in the surrounding area Tofta Manor. King River There are 3 loops of approx. 4 km. Tofta is located west of Kungälv. The famous architect Gert Vingård has his house there. This is a nice activity you can do if you are on your way to Marstrand, because it is almost on the way there.
Marstrand
Walk around Marstrandsön. Marstrand. There are several choices. The longest distance is approximately 5 km. It is fantastic to walk around the island. I have done that many times. However, you should bear in mind that it can be hilly at times, so it is not so accessible for those with mobility impairments. There are several hotels on Marstrand. Popular hotels include Nautical Hotel , Grand Hotel, Villa Maritime Marstrand.
Koon
Hike 3 loops on Koön with a view towards Marstrand. Three loops, 2-5 km. blue, green, black. (Read the article about our own hikes on Koön). These three loops are well completed, with fantastic views as you reach different peaks in the mountains. Man, see Pater Noster in the west, Åstol and Hakefjorden in the North. As well as, Marstrand a little to the south. If you want to stay overnight, recommended Marstrand's Sea Hotel, which is a full spa, which can be nice to use after the day's activities.
Animal Island
Wander on Animal Island. Very nice hiking trail of between 5-7 km, but some passages are more strenuous. Since this is an island, you have to take a boat. If you want to go to southern Dyrön, you go via Rökan, which is right next to it Instöbron on the way to Marstrand. If you want to go to Norra Dyrön, it's easiest to go to Rönnäng's bridge, to jump on a boat there. (Read about our own hikes on Dyrön)
King River
Wander in The fountain. King River There are many different trails here. 1 km to 10 km is color marked. The Bohusleden passes here.

Northern Bohuslän
Ramsviklandet
Ramsvikslandet is located in Sotenäs municipality. Midway between Smögen and Hunnebostrand. There is a 6 km long tour that offers fantastic views of the sea and the cliffs. To get out there on this island, you first pass a dug channel, called the Sotenkanalen. This may be the first stop of the day. Here you see boats, big and small, passing this narrow channel. Then go on over to the island itself, where you can easily find various hiking trails. Suggested parking place and starting point for the hike. The trail goes through a nature reserve that is rich in plants and animals. You can rest at one of the many barbecue areas or picnic tables along the way.

The Kungskliftan
A 3 km long tour that takes you through an impressive gorge in Fjällbacka. The trail goes along a staircase of wooden planks that winds between the rock walls. You can also visit Ingrid Bergman's square and see the statue of the famous actress who spent many summers in Fjällbacka. It is also possible to get up on the mountain and look out over the Fjällbacka archipelago. Here you can find it on the map. (Read about our own hikes in Fjällbacka)
Rod head
A 4 km long tour that gives you an insight into Lysekil's history and culture. The trail runs through a nature reserve consisting of red granite cliffs and flowering meadows. You can see the remains of an old quarry, a lighthouse and a maritime museum. You can also swim at one of the small coves. When you live in Lysekil can Grand hotel Lysekil, Gullmarstrand Hotel or The hotel WON be alternatives to value.
Hamburg Island
Hamburg Island is located outside Hamburgsund.
Go to Hamburgsund. Take the ferry across.
Follow the road to the left and search for the place that has a link below. On the way out, there is a viewpoint, where you can see all the way to the Väder Islands if the weather permits. Link to the parking lot at Hamburgö.
Or, go right after the ferry, there are trails there too. But it can be difficult to find parking.

Bovallstrand
Bovallstrand has nice hiking trails. The trails are from 5 km to 50 km. The Bohusleden passes by. Different colors mark the different joints. Here you can both hike and jog. Here Do you park the car most suitable. But, you start the hike here. Another starting point for your hike.
Bovallstrand is located in the Bottnefjord. At the end of it is the Bottna area. There are nice hiking trails there. Link to, Bottna.se, hiking trails.
The walnut tree
There are very nice trails on Valön. You get a "close to the sea" experience. Expect to spend around 2 hours at the site. It's a leisurely ride, not too difficult if you stick to the trails. Keep in mind that it can be windy and if it's mountains that are black, then it's incredibly slippery when it gets wet.

Valön is located between Hamburgsund and Bovallstrand. So, if you are looking for accommodation can Villa Akvarellen, Bottna inn, or Kustnära be good alternatives.
Hunnebostrand.
Walk along Hunnebostrand strand towards Ullebergs harbour, north out. There is a nice trail that runs along the sea. On that trail, art sculptures and other nice things. Expect to spend around 1-2 hours at this location. But, it's not very far. Not so much slopes. If you want, you can also buy fish in the local fish shop, which is great, they also serve food. It is located approximately 200-300 meters from the car park that is there. Link for both the hike and the fish shop.
Smögen
In Smögen there are several choices.
- 1. Go to Smögen's docks. This is a classic, which many tourists do. The visit here includes lots of experiences. It's not that far to walk, but a lot to look at. Restaurants, shops, etc. There are often many people there, so you have to look for parking sometimes, but it usually works out. Link to the location:
- 2. If you want to get away from the pulse and experience more nature in Smögen. Then head to Sandön nature reserve. There are some shorter easy trails that are very nice to visit. You will see water lilies and there is a good beach to cool off at.

If you want to challenge yourself and enjoy nature for several days, you can try one of these longer tours:
Bohusleden
A 37-mile trail that stretches from Lindome in the south to Strömstad in the north. The trail is divided into 27 stages that vary in length and degree of difficulty. You can choose to walk the entire trail or just a few stages. Along the trail there are wind shelters, fireplaces and water sources where you can spend the night and cook.
The coastal path
The coastal path An 87 km long trail that follows Bohuslän's coastline from Svanesund on Orust to Grebbestad in Tanum. The trail is divided into 9 stages that go through forests, meadows, cliffs and fishing villages. You can see many sights along the way, such as ancient ruins, churches, museums and works of art. Along the trail there are campsites, hostels and cabins where you can stay.
Pilgrim's trail
A 58 km long trail that runs between Varnhem and Uddevalla. The trail is part of the old pilgrimage route between Skara and Nidaros (Trondheim) in Norway. The trail goes through a varied landscape with forests, lakes, fields and hills. You can visit several historical sites along the way, such as monasteries, churches, castles and cemeteries. Along the trail there are pilgrim homes, bed and breakfasts and hotels where you can stay.
Gotaleden
Gotaleden stretches between Gothenburg and Alingsås. About 7 miles long. You can jump on and off the trail in several places, as there is a train track nearby all along the way. You pass, among other things, the "Garveriet" in Floda, which is super nice. Cooking from scratch with ecological thinking, etc.
Wilderness trail
The wilderness trail, stretches between Skatås to Hindås. It is about 4 miles of trails.

Other activities in Bohuslän
Besides hiking, there are many other things to do in Bohuslän. Here are some suggestions:
– Go boating: Bohuslän has a fantastic archipelago with thousands of islands and islets. You can go with regular boats or rent your own boat to explore the different islands. You can also try fishing, kayaking or snorkelling in the clear water.
– Visit the museumr: Bohuslän has a rich history and culture that you can learn more about at various museums. For example, you can visit the Nordic watercolor museum in Skärhamn, the Bohuslän museum in Uddevalla, Havets hus in Lysekil or the Vitlycke museum in Tanumshede.
– Experience art: Bohuslän is also a mecca for art lovers, with many galleries, studios and public works of art. For example, you can see the famous petroglyphs in Tanum, which are a world heritage site, or the modern sculptures in the Pilane cemetery on Tjörn.
