Swim at Fotö
What is more summer than swimming in the sea, one might ask. For those of us who live and grew up in Bohuslän, swimming is a natural part of summer activities.
There have been many bathing occasions on various islands north of Gothenburg and in northern Bohuslän over the years. But, I haven't explored all the good bathing spots in Gothenburg's archipelago yet. To counteract that, we went to Fotö one summer day. Here is a short story about our bathing excursion to Fotö.
Fotö is located as its own island, but is connected to Hönö via a bridge. To get to Fotö, you start by going to Hjuvik, or actually to Lilla Varholmen where you take the car ferry to Hönö. Then there is another journey of about 5 km before landing at Fotö.
It is perceived as a tourist-poor island. Because it feels like most things are arranged for those who have holiday homes or are permanent residents. But, that makes it even more interesting to experience, so close to Gothenburg.
Good bathing facilities
The swimming facilities are good at Fotö. There is plenty of space on the rocks and there is a good swimming ladder. We saw several lying in and snorkeling in the bay, so it's probably nice to view the bottom here.
Leave on time in the morning
One tip I can give is to go out early to the bathing place you are going to visit. Even Fotö has the same phenomenon as in all places in Gothenburg, people come out late in the morning on the rocks. Therefore, go out early to the swimming pool, because then you will have the rocks to yourself. Do not eat breakfast at home, but take breakfast with you to the rocks.
So enjoy the morning and then when all the other people arrive and there are many people on the rocks, around 13-14. Well, then it's time to pack up your things and head home.
As usual in Bohuslän, it is fine to take your own small walks or hikes on the rocks. It's an easy way to see more and maybe find your own little place. We chose to lie still this day, but saw others walking around.
As I mentioned, Fotö is not the most tourist-dense place, but there is a well-arranged harbor area and also parking space for motorhomes.
Parking for our car was no problem either. But, we were out on time in the morning as well, as I suggested.
Fotö is just one of many beautiful places in Gothenburg and Bohuslän. If you want to read more about good swimming spots, I recommend you visit our information about bathing spots in Gothenburg and the rest of Bohuslän.
