4 day travel guide - Strömstad to Lysekil

In this post, I'm going to share an itinerary for a four-day west coast road trip, with a focus on kid-friendly activities. The trip goes between Strömstad, Fjällbacka, Smögen and Lysekil

We start our journey in Strömstad, a charming coastal town that has a lot to offer for both young and old. Here you can enjoy the sun and swim on one of the many beaches, or take a walk along the harbor and watch the boats. For the playful, there is a large playground in the center, where children can climb, swing and slide. If you want to shop, there is a large shopping center, Nordby, just outside the city, where you can find everything from clothes and toys to candy and food. A tip is to bring a cool bag with you, so you can buy fresh seafood and other delicacies from the sea.

If you want to experience something extra, you can take a boat trip to the Koster Islands, which are about an hour from Strömstad. There you can explore the beautiful nature, which is part of Sweden's first marine national park. You can rent bikes or kayaks, or just wander around the car-free islands. There are several nice swimming spots, and also an aquarium where you can see fish and other sea animals.

To live in Strömstad, I recommend Strömstad spa and resort, which is located right by the harbor and has a view of the sea. It is a family-friendly hotel with spacious rooms and a good breakfast buffet. There is also a sauna and a spa for those who want to relax.

After a good night's sleep in Strömstad, it is time to continue our journey south. On the way, you can make a stop at Risö, which is a popular bathing spot with a sandy beach and cliffs. Here you can take a dip in the salty water, or just enjoy the sun on the beach.

The next destination is Fjällbacka, a picturesque fishing village known for its red wooden houses and its dramatic cliff, Vetteberget. Here you can do several exciting things, such as hiking up to Kungsklyftan, where scenes from the movie Ronja Rövardotter were filmed, or visiting Ingrid Bergman's square, where there is a statue of the famous actress who loved to vacation in Fjällbacka. For detective fiction fans, there is the opportunity to take a guided tour in Camilla Läckberg's footsteps, and see places that inspired her books.

To live in Fjällbacka I suggest Pension Stora Hotellet Bryggan, which is located in the middle of the village and has a lovely view of the harbour. It is a cozy guest house with personal service and a homely atmosphere. The rooms are individually decorated and have comfortable beds. There is also a restaurant that serves good food with local produce. Other options are Stora Hotel Fjällbacka or Fjällbacka guest house and hostel.

On the way to Smögen, you can stop in Hunnebostrand to explore or take another detour Ramsviklandet for a scenic hike by the Soten Canal. There is plenty to do in Smögen - visit Smögenbryggan, discover museums, enjoy a sea bath and go on an exciting paddle trip with a kayak.

The accommodation in Smögen is wide. A safe choice is Smögens Hafvsbad which is a hotel that has been around for many years. You can also try Kungshamn hotel suites, or search for Smögen Camping so is a little outside the center.

End your trip in Lysekil where you can visit Norden Ark to meet different animal species and enjoy the House of the Sea with its marine themes and activities.

Lysekil is a larger community than Smögen, so there is even more accommodation to choose from. But, Grand Hotel Lysekil or Beach girls' sea hotel are well known hotels. You can also go across the fjord to Gullmarsstrand, there you have it Gullmarstrand spa and conference.

This itinerary, featured above, is full of kid-friendly adventures and opportunities for the whole family to make lifelong memories. Whether it's playful moments, exciting excursions or nature experiences, there is something for everyone on this driving holiday along the West Coast.
