Hike in Smögen

Smögen 2

Smögen is a place that is always nice to visit regardless of the season. Of course, it is the summer that is most popular and there are many things going on to experience. But, since we partly live in northern Bohuslän (we have been able to spend a lot of time in Bohuslän during this pandemic that has ravaged the world), we have been able to visit Smögen even in winter.

A triple hike in Smögen

Below I write about different occasions we have visited Smögen lately.

  • Sandön Nature Reserve / hiking trail.
  • Strolling on Smögenbryggan (See Smögen destination)
  • Christmas Eve with a view towards HÃ¥llö.

Sandön Nature Reserve

We start with when we visited Smögen on an August day in 2021. Our plan then was to explore Smögen's nature a little extra, instead of strolling on the jetty, which is so common. As usual, we turned off at the roundabout that differentiates whether you should continue to Kungshamn, or turn off to Smögen. Once out on the Smögen Bridge, one is amazed by Sweden's beautiful archipelago, again, where Smögen is one of Bohu's finest pearls. Almost immediately after the bridge, we turned off towards the Sandön Nature Reserve, at the ICA shop. Just a short distance down the road, we parked the car at a well-arranged parking lot, where there is information about Sandön's hiking trail.

The hiking trail starts at a bathing place, which is a nice start and enables you to leave family members there, if they don't want to hike the roughly hour-long trail. However, the trail is well organized with a lot of paved surface most of the way, so it is possible for wheelchairs, prams and elderly people who want easier access. A bit anyway.

Once out on the trail, we hiked northwest towards the promontory that Sandön has. On the way there we discovered a small pond with water lilies, which was a nice touch. We then hiked out to the farthest point. Of course, we treated ourselves to a little well-deserved rest while taking in the view.

On the way back, we chose to follow the path that goes further west over the rocks. It was not as easy to walk, but it was well marked. It made the feeling of nature more tangible. About an hour later, the hike ended at the bathing area again.

Smögenbryggan

Smögenbryggan is popular to visit. We also like it, but try to place our visits to Smögenbryggan during the periods that are a little less popular days. This avoids most of the crowding and the store staff have more time to help. As you know, Smögen harbor basin has two sides, which one is the most popular. But, our recommendation is to also visit the "other side", because a lot has happened there in recent years. There are several restaurants and it is possible to hike out on the rocks, to just relax or maybe take a swim. We have written in more detail about different tours you can do around Smögen on our destination page about Smögen, so go there to get more information.

Christmas Eve excursion

During the worst of the pandemic, with complete isolation, when you were not allowed to see anyone other than your immediate family, we chose to visit Smögen on Christmas Eve itself. We packed up a good morning coffee and headed out for a short walk. Then we sat on the rocks with a view towards Hållö. The sun was out and the beautiful light showed its best side. It was a very nice time. So, Smögen also delivers a Christmas Eve
