Valön Nature Reserve; Hiking on the rocks

Valön

We visit Valön by Hamburgsund, Tanum municipality quite often. It is always something special to step out into nature, to walk in the open air there. It is a nature reserve that has managed to retain much of the original times, when the land was used for agriculture and its animals. Although we have visited the area many times, you always find something new to see or a new mountain peak to climb.

Parking at the Valön Nature Reserve

When we head to Valön, we simply park the car at the designated parking lot. From there you can choose to start in two ways.

The southern trail along the water

One way is by wandering through the meadows at the beginning. Then you get a bit of the green nature with you first. But, soon the rocks will come. From there you follow a path that takes you around a loop in about 1 hour. It is occasionally well hilly and the waterline is often close to the feet. After about 15-20 minutes you will have come out on the west side of the area. There the sea opens up and you can now choose slightly different routes to follow. There aren't really that many trails, but more rocks in the open that provide different opportunities to find your way when you hike north. The hike is demanding at times, but with normally functioning fitness, most people can handle this tour.

The western trail more straight on the roar of the sea

The other choice is to start your hike more directly towards the rocks. Then you get to a height quite quickly and look far out into the sea band, to the west. It's always a beautiful sight. But, it takes about 10-15 minutes before you have hiked on the trails that take you to the outermost cliffs. We often use this route as our goal is to get to the water a little faster, for those days when the goal is more to swim and have a picnic. Keep in mind, however, that it is slippery on some parts of the rocks when the rock gets wet. You can often see it by the fact that there are black parts on the mountain.

The area is a nature conservation area, so it is important to respect the local regulations that apply. If you are unsure, you can read the article about right of public access or if nature reserve.

It is always wise to bring a windproof jacket, because no matter how hot it is, the wind is cold and suddenly the sun goes into the clouds for a while. Having good shoes is also preferable. As there are varying crowds when hiking in the Bohuslän landscape.

Hope you have a nice trip.
